Gamma-radiation exposure was moni¬tored by lithium fluoride thermolumi¬nescent dosimeters placed in such a man¬ner that both horizontal and vertical exposure distributions could be deter¬mined around the 10,000-Ci 131Cs source. Radiation attenuation by tree trunks was 50% or greater near the source, but, beyond 40 to 50 m from the source, there was no significant difference between exposures on the side facing the source vs. the side away from the source. At distances beyond 20 m, radiation attenuation in the Enterprise Radiation Forest was greater than in similar experi¬ments at the Savannah River Plant and Brookhaven National Laboratory and less than at El Verde, Puerto Rico, Rain Forest.nThe experimental design for the Enter¬prise Radiation Forest dosimetry was developed during the preirradiation period and is described in detail by Salmonson, Blank, and Nelson (1974). This chapter reports on radiation mea¬surements, radiation distribution in the experimental area, and radiation attenua¬tion by tree trunks. The measurements were taken during the irradiation of the northern forest from May 2 to Oct. 16, 1972. Radiation facilities and vegetation are described in various chapters in Rudolph (1974)
