Thermal Treatment Technique for Cancer-Eye

In the treatment of bovine ''cancer-eye'', heat localization is especially important when the tumor is located on the cornea and somewhat less critical for tumors on the lid. The device was developed by LASL for this application. Electric current, at a frequency of approximately 2 MHZ flows through the tumor and between the two electrodes. A thermistor in the tip of one of the electrodes monitors temperature. When temperature exceeds about 48.5 exp 0 C, a once-per-second beep is initiated to notify the operator that treatment has begun. After a brief overshoot, temperature is controlled at 50 exp 0 C near the probes but is higher (approximately 56 to 58 exp 0 C) at the surface between the probes. The operator counts the ''beeps'' to determine treatment time. (ERA citation 03:048802)
