Conceptual Design of a Coal to Methanol Commercial Plant:Capital Cost Validation.

The US Army Engineer Division,Huntsville (USAEDH) has reviewed,validated,and updated a capital cost estimate of the Conceptual Design/Coal to Methanol Commercial Plant,prepared by Badger Plants,Inc. This facility was designed to have a feed rate of 74,000tons per day of coal and 7,500tons per day of limestone. The facility was designed to produce approximately 386,400barrels per day of 96.5weight percent methyl fuel, 28,600barrels per day of chemical grade methanol,and 660tons per day of sulfur. At full production,the plant will use approximately 330,000kWh per hour and $11.4million (1977dollars) per year of catalysts and chemicals. At full capacity,the plant will employ approximately 1,715people. Results of the USAEDH estimate showed a fixed capital cost of $3,489,179,900which is greater than Badgers estimate of $3,105,103,800 (both estimates based on late 1977dollars). The overall confidence factor was determined to be plus or minus 12.4percent. (ERA citation 04:000407)
