Load and Use Characteristics of Electric Heat Pumps in Single-Family Residences

These field tests were designed to record heat pump and total house electric energy usage every 15 minutes using magnetic tape recording equipment. A total of 120 existing installations in 12 different geographic regions was instrumented.nThe aims of the study were to: 1) Measure heat pump heating system and component performance factors;2) Determine the electric power input and energy use charac¬teristics as a function of: climate, house size and type of construction, occu¬pants, internal loads, heat pump model and size;3) Compare heat pump and electric furnace heating systems with respect to total energy use, maximum electric power demand and time-of-day profiles;4) Compile data during the project which relate to the maintenance and reliability of the heat pumps under test;5) Collect and format data for future use with computer programs simulating building energy dynamics.
