Environmental-Protection Evaluation for Vadose Zone Well-Injection Study: Deep-Release Applications

The environmental impacts associated with the Vadose Zone Well Injection Study - Deep Release Applications (an experimental modeling effort), are evaluated in this environmental protection evaluation. The construction phase of the project is complete. The proposed project is part of the Hanford Long-Term Transuranic Defense Waste Program. The experiment is designed to verify the accuracy and applicability of models used to predict the movement of radionuclide-containing effluents throughout the vadose zone of typical Hanford soils. By accurately predicting waste location, movement, and residence time, the knowledge derived from this study will play a major role in planning waste management programs at Hanford, and will reduce the costs associated with waste monitoring, location, and ultimate disposal.
