A real-time ultrasonic imaging system was developed to permit the simultaneous measurement of the radii and velocities of large bubbles rising through a liquid. It was constructed as a possible technique for studying the dynamics of large bubbles rising in liquid sodium. The characterization of such bubbles in one part of a program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory known as the Fuel Aerosol Simulant Test (FAST). The purpose of the FAST program is to investigate events following a simulated hypothetical core-disruptive accident in a liquid-metal fast breeder reactor.
