In-Situ Determination of Strength Parameters of Marine Soils

Principles are developed whereby both the sear strength, S, and the effective soil strength angle, phi', can be calculated from the readings of a combined shear/normal-stress gauge mounted on the face of a rough penetrator. The method calculates S and phi' even if interface friction is the mechanism of failure, unless that friction is local to the gauge face.
