In a rural area of Southern Illinois, an existing, large underground water cistern was retrofitted with urethane insulation and waterproofing to determine the feasibility of the longterm storage of solar heat and environmental coolness. The main objective of the project was to measure the thermal characteristics of the storage, in particular heat storage times and interactions between storage and surrounding soil. A 15.3 m exp 2 solar collector was site-built to provide the desired heat for storage. The heat was transported in a closed loop to a parallel-tube heat exchanger, which was positioned vertically in the cistern. The experimental approach and results obtained for a longterm energy storage system are described. (ERA citation 81:025380)
