摘要

Seasonal storage of thermal energy in aquifers has the potential to make a significant near-term contribution towards relief of the national energy shortage. Winter chill, summer heat, and various forms of industrial waste heat and chill can be stored for future demand, thus reducing the need for generating primary energy. This seasonal storage of heat and chill in aquifer systems is being assessed as part of the Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) Program. The STES Program is managed by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) for the US Department of Energy (DOE). The program is designed to conduct research and development studies required to provide the technical base for implementation of the Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) concept.
