Thermodynamics of Phase-Transformation Toughening

Phase transformation toughening is strongly related to the negative coefficient of thermal expansion and the volume contraction in the phase transformation in ZrO sub 2 . The effect is the opposite of the embrittlement in ordinary phase transformations. Without a negative volume change upon heating or a positive volume change upon cooling the material would not be fracture toughened.
