The use of solar energy for industrial and commercial applications, particularly process heat, is presented. Flat plate, evacuated tube, and parabolic trough solar collectors are described briefly, and their temperature ranges and costs are given. Other solar technologies, including biomass conversion, wind power, solar ponds, photovoltaics, and passive design are also discussed. A checklist is given to help determine the feasibility of a solar heating system for a particular application. Economic aspects of using a solar energy system are discussed. Information is given on the installation and operation of a solar energy system, including the question of solar access.
