A bench scale study was conducted to examine the rate of reaction of hydrogen sulfide with liquid copper for the purpose of recovering hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide. It was found that the reaction rate at 1200 exp 0 C was rapid and that the conversion of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen approached the equilibrium level of 99.7%. The rate and the conversion remained constant until nearly all the copper was converted to cuprous sulfide. Using a model based on the Cu-S phase diagram, it was concluded that the gas phase mass transport was the rate-controlling step during most of the reaction period. Preliminary technical and economic assessments were performed for a hydrogen recovery process based on liquid copper and cuprous sulfide intermediates. 21 figures, 16 tables.
