One type of steam generator which is applicable to a Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor Plant is a straight, duplex tube unit with a shell bellows for thermal expansion and a single tubesheet with an integral leak detection system. Additional design data for the duplex tube concepts are provided by the development tasks which have been completed for the single tubesheet and the duplex tubes. The network of holes to provide an integral leak detection system in the single tubesheet and a probe to identify the leaking tube have been proven feasible. Leak detection grooves must be provided along the length of the tubes at the tube interface for complete leak detection monitoring. EBR-II mechanically bonded tubes and other mechanically bonded tubes with different manufacturing parameters were evaluated for chemical and mechanical properties, thermal cycling and thermal conductivity. The mechanically bonded tube heat transfer performance can degrade due to thermal cycling or from exposure to temperature above the creep range for the tube material. Tests with flat plates indicated that metallurgically bonded tubes can be made with integral leak detection paths. To use the duplex tube concept with higher temperatures, further development work is required with the metallurgically bonded tube. (ERA citation 07:056783)
