Mutagens and Carcinogens from the Production and Use of Energy. High-Volume Sampling of Airborne Mutagenic Compounds. A Comparison of Different Sampling Systems

Samples of urban air have been collected simultaneously with different sampling systems, including electrostatic precipitation and high volume filtration on various filters for particle sampling and adsorption on activated carbon and organic polymers for sampling of volatiles. Acetone extracts of the samples were analyzed for polyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and tested for mutagenicity. The results showed a good agreement between PAH-results obtained with the various particle-samples, whereas the mutagenic activity of these samples showed large variations. None of the adsorbents tested were suited for sampling volatiles for mutagenicity, and they sampled different amounts of volatile PAH. 22 tables, 6 drawings. (ERA citation 09:044725)
