Beat-Wave Laser Accelerators: First Report of the R.A.L. (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, England) Study Group

An attempt is being made to see what is involved in constructing a high energy accelerator using the laser beat-wave principle of Tajima and Dawson. An initial study of possible parameters for a 5 TeV machine has already been made by Ruth and Chao. The present study follows the same path, but looks at further problems such as how to produce the plasma, and how to arrange 'staging'. Factors which determine the luminosity in colliding beam operation are also examined. An attempt is being made to develop a more realistic model of the physical beat-wave process. Work is at an early stage, but already difficulties are evident; inventive suggestions of how to overcome these are needed. (Atomindex citation 15:006649)
