6000 Tpd SRC-I Demonstration Plant, SRC Process and Deashing Water Bath Solidification System: Design Baseline Package

Equipment diagrams, flowsheets, and specifications for a water bath solidification system are included in this report. The water bath extrusion system will solidify and pelletize molten streams of solvent refined coal produced in the SRC-I process unit. The final product will be rods or pencils with a maximum diameter of 1/2 in. with sufficient strength to minimize dusting and breakage. In order to process the various streams listed above, two extrusion units will be provided, each with a capacity of 46 tons per hour. Each unit is capable of 50% turn-down. The process will work as follows: (1) Molten streams will be received from the SRC stripper bottoms pump by one of three off-battery tanks (V-12801, 12802 or 12803). (2) The molten streams will then be pumped to one of four feed tanks. Enroute to these tanks, the streams will be cooled to about 460 exp 0 F by an in-line steam generator cooler. (3) The feed will be further cooled in the agitated feed tanks to about 430 exp 0 F. (4) The cooled, molten SRC will then be pumped by a variable speed rotary pump to an electrically heated extrusion header atop the solidification tank. Here it flows through specially designed nozzles protruding from the bottom of the header into the water where it is chilled into solid forms resembling a pencil. The pencils drop to the bottom of the solidification tank into a conveying system which lifts them out of the water and transports them to storage. Air from the SRC Product Drying Fan passes over the wet pencils to further dewater them during conveying. The Exhaust Fan aids in removing the excess humidity from the Extrusion Building. Figures.
