Glass compositions in the MgO-Li sub 2 O-Al sub 2 O sub 3 -SiO sub 2 system can be designed with melting temperatures less than 1200 deg C. Such glass systems wet SiC surfaces with equilibrium contact angles between 30 and 50 deg observed at temperatures between 950 and 1150 deg C. Glass compositions low in MgO and Al sub 2 O sub 3 resulted in lower equilibrium contact angles and, hence, larger expected adhesive energies at test temperatures just above the melting point.
