Fourteen standard compounds were synthesized for use in determining compound types in coal-derived liquids. Capillary column gas chromatographhy/mass spectrometry was used to determine whether or not linked aromatic compounds were present in coal-derived liquids. Results indicate the possible presence of these compounds, but at extremely low levels (<0.05%). Therefore, a more direct approach to fractionating, separating, and identifying the heavy end fractions was pursued. Gel permeation chromatography was used to provide molecular weight fractions of an SRC II heavy distillate for analysis by supercritical fluid chromatography. The effects of addition of polar modifiers (propylene carbonate and dimethylformamide) on supercritical fluid solvating power were studied. These modifiers greatly increased the solvating power for large PAH, and will be useful in the application to heavy ends. The liquid crystalline polysiloxane stationary phase was shown to be effective in separating large PAH under supercritical conditions. Finally, a direct heated interface for coupling of a supercritical fluid chromatograph to a mass spectrometer was constructed and successfully evaluated. High molecular weight compounds were successfully analyzed under electron impact ionization conditions at the low nanogram level. 21 figs., 3 tabs. (ERA citation 13:015444)
