Applications of Lower Cost Computers to Dimensional Gaging: Topical Report

Small, lower cost microcomputers have been used in two computer-assisted gaging applications. Both provide capabilities that would be difficult and time-consuming to obtain by manual methods. A calculator and eight LVDT gage heads measure the thickness of a part at 64 evenly spaced locations. The computer applies complex secondary tolerances that have permitted the product yield to increase to 95% from the previous 50%. A microcomputer uses two LVDT gage heads to measure the inside and outside diameters and roundness of other parts. Measurements are taken automatically at 16 equally spaced locations as the product rotates past the probes. (ERA citation 12:021019)
