Analysis of chromium volatility in the DWTF incinerator and in the molten salt processor

Thermodynamic methods have been applied to calculate the volatility of chromium both in atmospheres and in milligrams per cubic meter (stp) of offgas for the decontamination and waste treatment facility (DWTF) incinerator and the Rockwell molten salt processor. The known chromium species which have relatively high stabilities under oxidizing conditions and which contain elements found in either the DWTF incinerator or the molten salt processor are CrO(sub 2)(OH)(sub 2)(g), CrO(sub 2)OH(g), CrO(sub 3)(g), CrO(sub 2)Cl(sub 2)(g), and CrOF(g) and CrO(sub 2)F(sub 2)(g). This study demonstrates that these species as well as others such as CrO(OH)(sub 2)(g), CrOOH(g), CrO(OH)(sub 3)(g), CrO(sub 2)Cl(g), CrOC1(sub 2)(g), CrOCl(g), CrOC1(sub 3)(g), CrOC1(sub 4)(g), and CrO(sub 2)F(g) can all be important species which contribute to the overall volatility of chromium in waste oxidation processes.
