Characterisation and Polymerisation Studies of Energetic Binders

In order to comply with Insensititive Munitions (IM) criteria, energetic binders comprising polymer and plasticiser(s) are finding use in cast- cured polymer bonded explosives and cast composite rocket propellants. Energetic binder systems confer energy output increases over conventional inert binder systems currently in use, and are thus of interest to the ADF. This report serves to characterise fully the physico-chemical properties of such energetic binder systems. Both the uncured prepolymer' binder and the fully cured system have been characterised by various techniques including thermal analysis, spectroscopic analysis, sensitivity tests, molecular weight chromatography and mechanical properties. Detailed cure information obtained from these analyses are used to ensure effective cure.
