Simulations of Radar Scattering Over a Rough Sea Surface

Forward scattering from a 2D rough sea surface is simulated using the Generalized Forward-Backward (GFB) method in a Monte Carlo fashion. Measurements were performed using a sealed ocean model in the NSWC Carderock Maneuvering and Sea-Keeping (MASK) wavetank facility. The mean, standard deviation and probability density function (PDF) of the computational and experimental data is compared and good agreement is found. Backscattering from a floating target on the rough sea surface is also computed. Results of a new hybrid approach are presented for computing the backscatter from a target on a rough sea surface by decoupling the target from the surface.
