摘要

The purpose of the tests included in Part I of the present invest-igation was to determine the fatigue and static properties of butt-welded joints in A-242 steel and to compare, quantitatively, these results with those obtained from similar joints in A-7 steel. Tests were performed on three low alloy steels having appreciably different chemical compositions to determine the uniformity of the results.nThe second phase of the investigation was carried out to determine whether brittle fracture would occur in a simple welded joint as a result of the stress concentrations inherent in a welded connection. The results of the few tests which have been conducted indicate that there is a considerable reduction in energy absorbing capacity (reduction of area and elongation), but little difference, however, in the strength or in the fracture appearance.
