摘要

Following up the report by R. I. Snyder for the 6th International Gas Conference, New York (1955) (1) attention is drawn to the great importance of gasleakage detection and the improvement of the existing methods. After a brief review of the most important articles which since 1955 have been published in periodicals about this subject in general, the very limited literature dealing with the use of trained dogs for this purpose is dealt with. Subsequently, the experiences gained in The Netherlands with two dogs trained for this purpose are discussed. The selection and training of the dog is of paramount importance. For achieving success, it certainly is just as important that the dog is placed in charge of a good leader and the pair should be well matched. This being the case the change-over from training to actual prac¬tice generally does not present great difficulties. The »dog»-method offers the advantages of swiftness, re¬liability and cheapness. There are some disadvantages that are nearly all connected with the fact that we have to do with living beings (leader and dog). On account of the experience wich the authors gained they are of opinion that the advantages more than counterbalance the disadvantages.
