Experimental Chemotherapy of Infection With Agents of the Psittacosis-Lymphog ranuloma-Trachoma Group.

Antibiotic and sulfa drug sensitivity of tracoma virus tested in embryonated eggs(Paul B. Johnston and J.Thomas Grayston, U. S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 2, Taipei, Taiwan): The strain TW-29 was titrated by yolk sac inoculation, and used in a dose of 1000 egg LD50,s per embryo to test the antibiotics. The antibiotic activity was expressed as shown in TABLE 1. Serial dilutions were mixed with virus and injected into the yolk sac; the greatest dilution preventing death in 50 per cent of the eggs was designated the protective dose 50 (PD50). In the virus controls without antibiotic, all the eggs died. The PD50 in the example shown in TABLE 1 was 6 jig. The surviving embryos were sacrificed on the 13th day, and yolk sac smears were stained for elementary bodies. To prevent infection (as shown by elementary body formation) in 50 per cent of the eggs, 15 mug. were required. With the 6 drugs tested, the dose to prevent death was usually about 1/1/2 to 2 times as much as the dose preventing infection.
