FUTURE TRENDS IN SOVIET SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The materials compiled here as indicative of Soviet projections into the future fall generally into these categories: 1) broad discussions of the whole field of science, usually at a very popular level and usually by the "elder statesmen" of Soviet science; 2) reviews of the status of a specific field by an authoritative representative; 3) reports of institutional activity or conference proceedings, which, while delineating present lines of research, recommend their continuance in the future or suggest other approaches; 4) announcements of innovation, that is, new institutions, new instruments, or new concepts, with direct implications for the future conduct of research; and 5) information on personnel, organization, and administration indicating overall scientific priorities.
