The Average Run Length, which is defined as the average number of samples required before a decision to adjust the machine is reached, when it is operating at a specified quality level, is used to evaluate the operating characteristics of three different process control procedures--Shewhart type control charts, cumulative sum control charts, and signed sequential ranking procedures. In comparing their relative performance, the Average Run Lengths CARL) required to stop the process when it is "in control" are set equal under the three procedures;the ARL's neces¬sary to detect preassigned shifts in the process are then compared.
