The Homopolar Inductor Alternator is generally connected to semiconductor devices so that the load is a subtransient changing one. The commutating reactance, consisting in a large part of the armature reactance, should be made as small as possible. The HIA must also be efficient and light. A method denoted as geometric programming is used for optimizing the HIA's design. The properties of the designs, the objective function, subjected to nonlinear constraints, is transformed into its dual function with linear constraints. Optimization procedure is established first for minimum leakage reactance, maximum efficiency, and minimum weight separately and a compromise design obtained by the method of least squares. Two computer programs are developed -- one for the design analysis calculating the losses, weights, and reactances. The second program is used to solve the quasi-Poissonian equation of the vector potential in the cross section for determination of the performance characteristic at any saturation. (Author)
