Finite Element Analysis of Notched Tensile Specimens in Plane Stress

A computer program using the finite-element method has been written to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of notched bars under plane-stress tensile loading. At load levels below general yield, notch-root strain measurements made on blunty-notched (K(t) = 3.06), 2024-T3 aluminum sheet specimens are within 8 percent of the values predicted by the numerical analysis. Experimental and analytical results indicate that the Neuber relationship for pure shear is not applicable to plane-stress tensile loading for the notch geometry and strain-hardening behavior encountered in the present study.
