A Study on the Venomous Fishes and Sea Snakes of Southeast Asia.

A study was conducted on the identification, geographical distribution, incidence of biotoxications, mechanisms of intoxication and nature of venom organs, of the fishes and sea snakes of Southeast Asia. Particular attention was directed to the scorpionfishes of the family Scorpaenidae. The venom apparatus of 14 species of the genus Sebastes were completely described. Studies were also conducted on the venom organs of Inimicus cuvieri, Centropogon marmoratus, Sebasticus marmoratus, and Helicolenus dactylopterus. Trips were made to Australia, S. E. Asia and Southern Africa. Field work was conducted in the Great Barrier Reef on the venomous starfish Acanthaster, sea wasp Chironex, and scorpionfishes of the genus Sebastodes and Synanceja. Field studies were also conducted on shark deterrents. A series of six technical papers were published during this contract period on the venomous rabbitfishes Teuthididae, sea anemone Actinodendron, leatherback fish Scomberoides, rockfishes Sebastes, and poisonous fishes in Mauritius and on the red-spotted crab Carpilius.
