Automatic Document Storage and Retrieval Systems.

Automatic document storage and retrieval systems are currently available in a variety of forms. In a survey of the marketplace, these systems were compared for the storage of engineering drawings. They were characterized mainly by the type of memory device use--magnetic tape or disk, laser mass memory, microfilm, and microfiche. None matched the idealized system described in this report. New memory devices are under development: homograms, ovonic memories, magnetic bubble memories, and vesicular film. A microfiche system for an existing engineering program, a magnetic tape or disk system for starting a new program, and a combination of the two for a large ongoing program are recommended. (Author)
