Ultrafiltration of Activated Sludge: A Comparison of Three Membrane Configurations.

Tubular, plate-and-frame, and hollow-fiber utrafiltration membranes were evaluated using screened activated sewage to determine their flux performance, maintenance requirements, and rejection of fecal coliform bacteria and suspended solids. The membranes were evaluated concurrently. Both the tubular and hollow-fiber systems consistently satisfied the marine discharge requirements for fecal coliform bacteria and suspended solids. The hollow-fiber membrane showed signs of physical plugging toward the end of the test. Although the plate-and-frame membrane consistently satisfied the suspended solids requirement, it showed inconsistent rejection of fecal coliform bacteria.
