It is generally recognized that compared to illumination from ceiling-mounted electric lighting, an equal amount of daylight illumination from windows can be about three times more effective in producing visibility. If this is true, then visibility-based lighting controls will result in greater energy conservation than will illumination-based lighting controls. A mathematical technique has been developed suitable for an intelligent microprocessor-based equi-visibility lighting control system. In an example room, a computer simulation compares the energy consumption for on-off, high-low-off, equi-illumination, and equi-visibility lighting controls systems. (Author)
