Archaeological and Historical Cultural Resource Reconnaissance of Blackhawk Park, Vernon County, Wisconsin.

In the fall of 1981, a cultural resources investigation was conducted of BlackHawk Park in southwestern Wisconsin for the St. Paul District of the Army Corps of Engineers. An intensive archaeological reconnaissance and an extensive literature search were designed to determine if cultural resources are present in the park. Although the literature search indicated numerous known archaeological sites in the vicinity of Blackhawk Park, neither historic nor prehistoric cultural remains were recorded, observed or recovered in the park during the course of the survey. The major historical event of the area, the Battle of the Bad Axe, may have been partially fought within the park, but any remains of this skirmish probably also have been obscured by flooding. It is concluded that any construction or filling within the park will not affect cultural resources. Originator-supplied keywords include: Ojibiway Indians, and Sioux Indians.
