Use of High Resolution Seismic Reflection and Side-Scan Sonar Equipment for Offshore Surveys.

Continuous seismic reflection and side-scan sonar geophysical equipment were developed during and shortly after World War II primarily as military tools, but their application to marine geology and oceanographic research was quickly realized. In the past three decades electronics technology has greatly improved the capability of geophysical equipment to function as viable tools to decipher, in three dimensions, the geomorphology, subbottom structure, and geological character of marine, estuarine, and lake regions. Integrated survey programs using several seismic reflection systems and side-scan sonar in conjunction with grab-type and core sediment samples have been successfully used in many environments.
