Brief Assessment of Structural Composite Materials Research in Universities in the United States

The use of advanced composite structural materials in defense systems is rapidly increasing and it is expected that this trend will continue in the foreseeable future. Thus, it is important to assess the role of universities to support the technology base and provide appropriate manpower to the defense industry. The results of such a survey and assessment are presented. It is recommended that DARPA support about 5-8 new university-operated composite material activities which should have a strong interaction with industry. Suggested funding needs and technical initiatives are outlined.
