The Total Expert Assisted Engineering Program (TOTAL-EASE) is a personal-computer based expert system for control system design. Conventional and Artificial Intelligence programming concepts are combined to develop a generic 'design associate' capable of assisting beginning control system engineers design control systems. TOTAL-EASE currently supports classical lead compensator design using root locus techniques. The program is interactive and allows the user to define any control design 'process' in the software such as lead compensator design. TOTAL-EASE employs an expert system to heuristically guide a student through a design session. Knowledge about control system design and lead compensation, in particular, is contained in various rule bases associated with the steps in the control system design process. An evaluation of TOTAL-EASE by a class of beginning control system engineers is present in this thesis. The evaluation results are encouraging and indicate that the scope of the program should be expanded into other control design techniques.
