摘要

The project area includes all Lake Oahe Corps land immediately west of Indian Memorial Recreation Area north to the North Dakota - South Dakota border. The inventory resulted in the relocation of 10 previously recorded sites. 33 new prehistoric sites, 32 new historic sites, and 18 isolated finds. Three of the previously recorded sites (39C03, 39C05 and 39C09) have both historic and prehistoric components. Two of the previously recorded sites, Fort Manuel (39C05) and Jake White Bull (39C06) are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Two sites (39C03 and 39C09) are considered eligible, 46 components at 45 sites are considered potentially eligible and 27 sites are not considered to contain sufficient information to be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Preliminary site patterning analysis yielded a high degree of accuracy in modeling site locations. Lithic resource utilization suggests a similarity in the utilization of Knife River flint for all time periods except for sites associated with the Coalescent Tradition. An investigation of the project area's geomorphology indicates that the first two terraces above the Missouri River (Mt1 and Mt2) have the greatest potential for containing additional in situ buried cultural deposits. The breaks topography contains numerous sites but with a lower potential for in situ cultural deposits. (FR)
