Wide Band Gyrotron Traveling Wave Amplifier Analysis

Linear and non-linear analyses on a gyrotron amplifier with a periodically disc-loaded cylindrical waveguide circuit are performed. The dispersion relation of the circuit allows for wideband interaction with a relativistic beam of moderate power (Vb = 60kV, Ib = 5A). Linear analysis of the interaction with the fundamental mode shows a gain of the order of 50-60dB/m over a bandwidth larger than 22% and a linear phase versus frequency characteristic. Nonlinear analysis predicts the following saturation characteristics: a 48kW peak output power at 5.3GHz with 16% efficiency. The saturation length of the tube is about 37cm. These results show that this device is competitive with conventional high power traveling wave devices in performance, and, being simpler in structure, also in cost.
