摘要

A 1:20-scale undistorted hydraulic model reproducing the lower reaches of the London Avenue Outfall Canal, the stepped seawall adjacent to Lakeshore Drive, and sufficient offshore area in Lake Pontchartrain to permit generation of the required test waves was used to investigate the effects of wave action at the site of a proposed hurricane protection structure. An 84-ft-long wave generator and an Automated Data Acquisition and Control System were utilized in model operation. Model tests indicated that wave conditions were very rough and turbulent along the lakefront and in the canal entrance (wave heights in excess of 9 ft) for hurricane storm wave conditions; however, wave heights in the vicinity of the proposed hurricane protection structure were negligible (less than 1 ft). The location of the proposed structure (in the lee of a bend in the canal) was satisfactory since it was not exposed to direct wave attack. The flat slopes of the overbank between the structure and the lake also expended wave energy as waves propagated up the canal.(Author)
