Archeological and Historical Survey of the Dam Site and Archeological Sampling of the Impoundment Area of the Proposed Buckhorn Lake, Johnston, Nash and Wilson Counties, North Carolina

The archeological and historical investigation of the Buchhorn Dam and Lake project area resulted in the discovery of 63 archeological sites and 12 standing structural complexes. Analysis of artifactual materials recovered in the project area indicates a long and varied occupation of this areas beginning with the Transitional Paleo-Indian/Early Archaic period and continuing through the late Historic period. Settlement pattern studies also were conducted for both the prehistoric and historic occupations. Information obtained on the standing structures located in the area indicate a mid-1800s through mid-1900s construction data with many exhibiting architectural characteristics of the early-1900s. Evaluative criteria were developed to assess the significance of these resources, and future recommendations are provided.
