Effects of Better Environmental Inputs in Estimating Sea Clutter

Microwave radars deployed near the marine environment, e.g., shipboard and airborne radars, are subjected to sea return or sea clutter. In many instances, sea return for radars at large angles of incidence or small grazing angles (less than 15 deg) is of special importance. This study examines the effects of better environmental inputs to an existing sea clutter model that has proven to be adequate for small grazing angles. Limitations in the existing model are described, improvements are suggested, and plans for improving the model are outlined and discussed.
