Analysis of the Impact of Ecological Variables on Burglary Rates in Terre Haute, Indiana

An ecological analysis was conducted of residential burglaries reported to the police in Terre Haute, Indiana, during the year 1980. Research questions were developed during a review of the literature on ecological studies of crime and specifically of the crime of residential burglary. A positive relationship was hypothesized between single individual households, single parent families, density, crowding, and the distance from the center of the city and the rate of residential burglary in the study site. Multiple regression analysis, using the SPSSX Information Analysis System, was conducted. Findings indicated a negative relationship between the independent variables and the residential burglary rate, thereby failing to support the research hypotheses.
