National Diagnostic Facility under Construction

The ITT Fluid Dynamics Research Center is nearing completion on the construction of a flexible diagnostic wind tunnel. The national facility will become a center for research at the university level on active and passive flow management of turbulent, unsteady and three-dimensional aerodynamics at high subsonic speeds. This unique wind tunnel will fill a serious void between other current basis research facilities in this country, and its use will be open to university, government and industry scientists. The facility is designed to operate at velocities up to 500 ft/sec in a test section of 4 ft by 5 ft cross section by 40 ft long. All operations of this facility, including optimum free-spectrum settings, unsteady flow operation, cooling of the tunnel air, the positioning and motion of aerodynamic models, the setting of streamwise pressure gradient as well as three-dimensional motions of traversing mechanisms and model positions, will be controlled by digital computers.
