Report summarizes the results of a study directed toward determining the feasibility of applying laser technology to UNREP deicing, and infrared heating technology to UNREP anti-icing and deicing. The shipboard applicability of lasers for use as an UNREP deicing tool was determined to be technically feasible, with the laser system operating in either a melting mode or a shattering mode. Design approaches were developed for overcoming concerns related to the ability of the laser to remove ice without damaging the underlying surface, and the ability to use the system without risk of injury to the operator or to other members of the deicing team.
