The relative performance of the Mg-rich primer, as compared to control coatings, is highly variable depending on the pretreatment. In some instances, the Mg-rich primer out-performs both the non-chromate and the chromate controls. However, over military-qualified pretreatments, the Mg-rich is not as good as the control coatings. In addition, poor performance was observed when the Mg-rich was tested without a topcoat. Also, relatively poor performance was observed in acidic salt fog, similar to that seen in early Mg- rich primer testing in the early 1970's. The ultimate goal is to produce a commercial nonchromate product that exceeds the performance of the currently qualified non-chromate primers regardless of surface preparation. While improvements to the Mg-rich primer over the past several years have led to increased performance, the Mg-rich primers still fall short of this goal.
