This is the final technical report for a research program to study optical controlled solid state opening switches. This program covers the period between August, 1988 and May, 1992 under the grant No. AFOSR-88-0246. The goal of the research is to study fundamental issues in a novel scheme to generate high power electrical pulsed power using optical controlled solid state opening switches. An optically controlled pulsed power system has been developed which is capable of delivering high power pulsed energy. This system employs a photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS) in an inductive energy storage pulsed power system (IESPPS). IESPPS offer advantage of small size with voltage and power step-up. However IESPPS imposes several stringent requirements on the switch. In fact, the switch must be nearly ideal with regard to fast opening time and low on-state resistance. Nevertheless, the PCSS performs quite well, yielding power gains of 50 with power output of nearly 100 KW. In this work, the pulse forming theories in the dual of the LC generator, the current charged transmission line (CCTL) and the dual of the Blumlein line DBL are studied for the first time.
