From Southern Flank to Southern Front

摘要

This study examines the nature of the threats to Western interests in theMediterranean region and recommends responses of a political and military nature that can be developed to create stability in this volatile region. The emphasis in this final product is on the underlying causes of instability in the region and the political and conventional military responses that can be used by the west to stabilize this part of the world. Maritime and unconventional forces have long been a reality in the Mediterranean region for the West, and although they are of vital importance to Western policy are not addressed in this study. This paper is intended to compile and interpret what has been written in recent years in order to create the necessary stability to promote economic cooperation and political stability within the region. The end state proposed in this paper may take even longer than the forty-five years it took to develop a unified Western Europe, but the West must begin to influence this process.
