Advancing Prostate Cancer Research by Providing Summer Research Opportunities for HBCU Students at the Cancer Center at UTHSCSA

The DOD-funded summer research experience has provided a unique opportunity forstudents from a Historically Black University to work at a NCI-designated Cancer Center for 10 weeks. Their research is conducted in funded prostate cancer researchers laboratories. Before starting their research in the laboratory, the students are provided training in both laboratory methods as well as the biology of prostate cancer. During the summer, they are exposed to enrichment programs ranging from health disparity presentations to survivorship research. In addition, they obtain career guidance from the Associate Dean of the Graduate School who emphasizes the importance of this summer for exploring career opportunities. It is evident that the students contribute to the research in their laboratories by the high quality of their presentations at the end of summer poster session.
