The specific project goals were:(a) Use of spectroscopic methods to understand the solvation environment for Mg2 in ionic liquid electrolyte systems.(b) Correlate the spectroscopic measurements with electrochemical investigative results of the Mg/Mg2 redox couple.(c) Gain insight into the varying electrochemical mechanisms for the deposition and dissolution processes(d) Identify the electroactive species for successful Mg electrodeposition. The overarching project goals were to learn to control the coordination environment of Mg2 in ionic liquids electrolytes so as to achieve reversible electrodeposition and electrodissolution of the Mg2 /Mg redox couple to enable magnesium batteries based on Mg metal anodes.
